A manual tile cutter works by creating a score across the tile before applying pressure and snapping the tile in two. They can easily create simple, straight, through cuts (standard rip or diagonal) on ceramic and porcelain tiles, generally up to ⅜” thick. When cutting any type of tile, make a few practice cuts using scrap tiles or broken pieces to get accustomed to the tool without wasting your materials.

Note: Glass and Natural Stone tiles should be cut with a Wet Tile Saw, which can also handle Ceramic and Porcelain tiles of thicker depth, and pavers (heavy duty only). Sheet Glass may be cut with a manual tile cutter assuming it has the correct blade inserted. Plexiglass, Vinyl and Laminate tile are not appropriate for this tool.

Operation:

1. Measure and mark the face of the tile with a pencil to indicate where you want to cut. 

2. Place the tile glazed side up onto the bed of the cutter beneath the cutting wheel and pressure pad, aligning the cutting marks with the guideline on the bed of the tool.
   ! Ensure the edge of the tile is firmly against the end stop on the cutter, and the edge guide as available. 

3. Move the cutting wheel along the rails until it rests against the near edge of the tile.

4. Score the tile.
   ! The first score you make is the most important, and ideally, it will be your last. Going over the same score several times results in uneven breakage and a ragged edge. 

• Use a continuous and solid motion with minimal pressure. (Pressing too hard can cause internal breakage and will damage the tile before snapping along the scoreline.) Apply slight downward pressure as you push the cutting wheel across the face of the tile surface, from the near side (closest to you) to the far side. The score line should be visible but can be faint.  

5. Adjust the pressure bar to the approximate center of the tile (making surelift the blade and not to re-score the tile) and make the snap cut by applying even, firm pressure to both sides of the tile over the metal snapping ridge.  Depending on the model, the pressure pad will engage either by lifting or depressing the handle. You may also manually apply pressure to snap the tile.

6. Once you’ve snapped the tile along the scoreline, use a diamond rubber sanding pad to smooth any rough edges by starting on the upper side of the tile and sanding downward. 

Safety:

• Always wear eye protection when cutting tile. Small and sharp fragments can easily fly up/into your face when the tile is snapped and cause irrevocable and easily avoidable damage. Wear safety glasses!

• Leather work gloves can add extra protection while handling pieces during snapping and sanding as an added precaution.
